Chapter 8: The Lawyer
On Thursday I carried the tabby into a law office on Park Avenue in a borrowed carrier.
Ben carried the clinic's spare towel.
"In case she objects to Park Avenue," he said.
"She's from Park Avenue."
"Then in case she objects to lawyers."
I'd asked him to come because he'd had the cat since June.
If anyone asked whether the locket had been tampered with, he could say no.
He'd closed the clinic for two hours to do it. His sister had made him wear a real shirt.
The family lawyer met us in a conference room with a view of the whole avenue.
He was tall and silver and polished, and he had handled my grandmother's affairs for twenty years.
He looked at the carrier like I'd brought in a bomb.
"Miss Vandermeer," he said. "You said on the phone this was urgent."
"My grandmother told me her real will is in the cat's locket," I said. "I'd like you to open it. Here, today, with a witness."
He sat down slowly.
The tabby growled from the carrier.
"Your grandmother said this to you?"
"In hospice. The week she died."
He folded his hands on the table.
"I don't doubt you," he said, in a voice that doubted me completely. "But the estate's current trustees are your parents. Any document that may alter the trust has to be opened in the presence of both trustees. Those are the trust's own terms."
"Then call them," I said.
He blinked.
"Now?"
"Unless you think they'd rather not know."
He called them.
They were there in forty minutes.
My mother came in first, in a camel coat, with her sunglasses on her head. My mother saw Ben and her smile thinned.
"Who's this?"
"The vet," Ben said. "I'm the one you never paid."
My father didn't sit.
My mother laughed, light and pretty.
