Brett was waiting on the sidewalk outside the clinic that afternoon, and he got down on one knee when he saw me.

Two patients and a delivery driver stopped to look.

He had no ring this time.

He had a folder.

"Bridget, please," he said. "Five minutes."

"Stand up."

"I can't. I'm begging."

I stopped three feet from him.

Nathan stood in the doorway behind me, holding my mother's coat, and didn't say a word.

Brett held the folder up with both hands.

"It's the license," he said. "The one from Saturday. I can't read half of it. I know you were in the room before the ceremony. You saw them slip it in. You can tell a judge it was a trick."

"I didn't see them slip anything in."

"You saw Colin hand me the release."

"I saw you sign a paper without reading it."

His face twisted.

"You were there!"

"I was leaving."

"You could have stopped me!"

I let that sit in the cold air.

"I could have," I said. "I wasn't allowed to. That was the rule, remember? 'Don't make a scene.'"
