Chapter 14: Dinner with the Sanderlings

Brett's parents flew into Portland on Thursday, and his father asked to take my mother to dinner.

"Only if she wants to," he said on the phone. "I'd like to say something to her face."

Mom wanted to.

She put on her good blouse and her cane and told Nathan at her morning session that she was going out to be treated like anyone else.

"Six laps first," he said.

She did seven.

The restaurant was a quiet place with white tablecloths and a window on the river.

Brett's father stood when we came in.

He was a tall man gone stooped, with Brett's jaw and none of Brett's smile.

"Mrs. Larkin," he said. "Thank you for coming."

"Call me whatever you like," my mother said. "Just pour the wine."

Brett's mother laughed, a short surprised sound, and the table loosened.

We ordered.

I was halfway through the bread when his father put down his fork.

"I owe you both an apology," he said. "My son wronged your daughter for two years in my family's name. I saw some of it and called it his business."

"You saw the passes?" I asked.

"I saw the group chat once, at Easter. A message about 'earning a Saturday.' I told myself it was a joke." He looked at his wife. "She told me it wasn't. I didn't listen."

"I told him on three holidays," Brett's mother said.

Mom reached across and covered his hand with hers.

"Well," she said. "Now you listened."

"The check is yours," he told me. "It was always going to be yours. I'm sorry that it took a lawyer's letter for me to say so."
