Chapter 19: The Deposition Room

The deposition was in a glass conference room on the nineteenth floor, with a court reporter, a pitcher of water and four lawyers.

My own lawyer sat on my left, a calm woman who had flown in from Portland with a legal pad and a bag of almonds.

"Answer what's asked," she had told me in the elevator. "Nothing more. If it's true, it's safe."

On the other side of the table sat Brett's lawyer, the gray coat from Portland, and beside her Brett, in a navy suit that hung off him.

At the end sat a third lawyer I didn't know, with a pleasant face and a pen.

"Kendra's counsel," my lawyer murmured. "She's observing."

Kendra herself wasn't there.

I looked for her anyway.

The court reporter swore me in.

Brett's lawyer opened a folder.

"Ms. Larkin, how long were you in a relationship with Mr. Sanderling?"

"Eleven years."

"And you were engaged?"

"For eleven months."

"Did you know of a ceremony planned for the day of your wedding?"

"I was told Kendra wanted to be bride for a day."

"Who told you?"

"Kendra asked. Brett answered."

"What did Mr. Sanderling say?"

I looked at Brett.

He was watching the table.

"He said, 'Sure. It's the last one.'"

"The last what?"

"The last pass."

"Pass," Brett's lawyer said. "Explain what you mean by that term."

I took a sip of water.

"For two years, when I was upset or jealous, Brett gave Kendra a pass. A day, or a night, or a weekend. He and his friends made the rules. The idea was that I would learn not to mind."

The reporter's keys clicked.

"Did Mr. Sanderling understand that Ms. Floyd was going to take part in a wedding ceremony?"
