Chapter 22: No Annulment

The courtroom on Monday smelled of floor wax and old paper.

I sat in the second row of the gallery with Nathan on my left and my Portland lawyer on my right.

Brett's father and mother sat directly behind us, and neither of them looked at their son.

Brett stood at the petitioner's table in his navy suit, his lawyer beside him in a gray coat.

Across the aisle sat Kendra.

She had come in a plain blue dress and no jewelry, with her hair in a low braid and her hands folded.

She had dressed to look wronged.

Her lawyer, the one with the pleasant face, leaned over and whispered something, and she nodded.

The judge came in and sat.

She was a small woman in her sixties with reading glasses on a chain.

"This is the petition of Brett Sanderling for annulment of a marriage solemnized last month," she said. "I have read the briefs. Counsel for the petitioner."

Brett's lawyer rose.

"Your Honor, the petitioner signed a document he believed to be a photographer's release. He was misled by the respondent and two friends. The consent was obtained by fraud."

"Counsel for the respondent."

Kendra's lawyer stood without hurry.

"Your Honor, the petitioner was present at a ceremony before an officiant and a witness. He spoke vows and exchanged a ring. On the day of the ceremony and on three days after, he did not object."

"He didn't know," Brett's lawyer said.

"He stood beside my client at a public reception on Saturday, introduced as her husband, before a hundred and twenty guests." The lawyer opened a folder. "I have a video."

Brett went white.

The video was twenty seconds long, from a guest's phone.

It showed Brett with Kendra on his arm.

It showed Kendra saying, "My husband," and Brett standing there with his mouth shut.
