Chapter 13: Five Thousand
I texted back.
"Where?"
The answer came from a number I didn't have saved.
"Crema on High Street, Columbus. Dec 27, 2pm. Come alone. R."
My mother wanted to drive me and wait in the car.
I said no.
She drove me anyway and parked across the street with a crossword.
Crema was the kind of coffee shop with plants hanging from the ceiling and a line out the door.
Courtney had a table in the window.
She was wearing a cream sweater and gold hoops, and she had already ordered for both of us.
"Oat milk, two pumps caramel," she said, sliding a cup toward me. "Trent told me."
I didn't touch it.
I sat down across from her.
The table next to us had two college girls on laptops.
Behind the counter, a barista was steaming milk.
It was loud enough to talk, and quiet enough that people would hear if anyone raised their voice.
"You look tired," Courtney said. "Is Colorado hard?"
"What do you want, Courtney?"
She smiled and folded her hands on the table.
"I want to help you."
