Chapter 21: The Lot by the Water
The gravel road ended at a rusted gate with a chain on it.
Shane got out, unlocked the chain and swung the gate wide.
"Close your eyes," he said when he got back in.
"That's corny."
"Humor me."
I closed them.
The truck bumped through trees for a minute and stopped.
I heard the engine die, and then I heard water, small waves slapping wood.
"Open."
We were in a cove with the mountains on three sides.
A long gray dock ran out into green water, with a rowboat tied at the end of it.
Behind us, a cabin sat in the trees with no paint left on it and a porch that leaned.
I knew the dock.
I had been seven when I first stood on it, with a rod too big for my hands.
"This is Heron Point," I said.
My voice came out small.
"My father fished here every Saturday of my life. It belonged to his friend."
"His friend died last spring. His kids listed it."
"Shane."
"Hargrove Homes wanted it for the next phase. They'd have put eleven houses on this shore and a boat ramp where the dock is."
I put my hand over my mouth.
"I had a little saved," he said. "Not much. I bought it before anyone else could. I didn't tell you, because it was your father's, and I didn't know how to say it without it sounding like I was trying to buy you."
"You didn't buy me."
"I bought forty feet of shoreline and a bad roof, Holly. It's yours when you want it. The deed can say whatever name you like."
