The Gilt Room on gala night had four hundred men in black masks and one omega in green.
Oren walked through the crowd with his chin up and a tray in his hands.
On it sat one crystal cup, one small lemon tart, and a glass vial with red wax.
The vial was a copy.
Ilse had filled it with sugar water at midnight, sealed it with a candle, and said: "If your hands shake, it will show."
His hands did not shake.
They had stopped shaking on the stairs.
Egon's voice carried across the great hall from the dais.
"Gentlemen. The finest evening of my house."
The crowd applauded.
Oren kept walking.
The hall was built in a horseshoe, six floors of gold balconies around an open marble floor, and along the ground level ran the booths.
Small, curtained rooms, numbered in brass.
He passed Four and Five and Six, where men sat with omegas in veils.
Behind Seven he saw a face he knew, an old client, and looked away.
