Chapter 6: Crossed Sevens
Friday dinner at the Dreyer house was served at seven, and Ilse set Oren's place directly across from her own.
"So that I can see your hands," she said.
"Ilse," Benedikt said from the head of the table.
"I'm being hospitable."
Oren picked up his fork.
He had been in the house six days.
He knew the sound of every stair, and the sight of his own shoulder in the black windows, and exactly how Benedikt looked at him when he thought nobody saw.
He was beginning to hate how much he liked it.
The meal was roast chicken and green beans, plain and good, and he was hungrier than he had been in years.
Ilse watched him eat the way she watched a ledger.
"Do you cook?" she asked.
"Not really. Pip did, at the club. Toast, mostly." Oren shrugged. "Mine come out flat."
"Pip."
"My best friend."
Ilse set her glass down.
"Where is he now?"
"Bought himself a bus ticket." It came out sharper than he meant. "And a new name."
Ilse's gaze flicked to Benedikt and back.
"I see."
On the sideboard behind her sat a small white box from a bakery on Ferry Street.
Oren's eye kept going to it.
It was the size of a hand, tied with string.
"What's in there?"
"Dessert," Benedikt said.
"What kind?"
"Lemon."
Oren put his fork down.
The smell was faint through the cardboard, sharp and sweet and buttery.
It was Friday at seven.
For two years it had been the only hour in his week that nobody owned.
"I used to have a regular on Fridays," he said, before he could stop himself.
Benedikt did not move.
Ilse's fork stopped halfway to her mouth.
