Chapter 13: The Blue Ribbon
By six o'clock the church hall held three hundred and fifty people, and every one of them had turned a chair toward the lefse table.
The Harvest Supper judged two things, the pies and the lefse.
It had done so every September for as long as I could remember.
Twenty blue ribbons hung on the wall behind the judges' table, in gold-painted frames.
Birgit sat at the head of the table in her navy dress, with her hands folded over a plate of her own lefse.
I sat at the other end with mine.
Between us were the pie judges, the pastor, and the oldest woman from the Altar Guild.
"This is a very sweet idea," Birgit said to the room, "that we should let a girl who has had such a hard season enter the contest. We are all praying for you, Sunniva."
"Thank you, Birgit."
"Shall we begin?"
The pastor stood.
He was a nervous man in a brown cardigan, and I had seen him cross the street to avoid me twice that month.
"The oldest woman at the Guild will judge, as always," he said. "Blind, by taste."
