Sunny's POV

The crane went home on Monday, because it could not get down Hill Street.

Torvald rescheduled it for the morning after the vote, and we all understood what that meant.

On the second Saturday in December, eight hundred people stood on the green outside Town Hall in the snow.

There was cider in paper cups and a spruce thirty feet tall with its lights still dark.

Rows of folding chairs had been set in a half circle facing the Town Hall steps, and the council sat at a long table on the porch under the heaters.

Torvald chaired it in his quilted vest, with a laser pointer and a screen.

He had a drawing of the marina.

Eighty condominium slips, a boardwalk, a restaurant, a sign.

It looked very nice.

I sat in the sixth row between Lasse and Brynja, with my braid over my shoulder and the Harvest Supper ribbon pinned to my coat.

I held the county sheet in my lap and had not unfolded it.
