Chapter 16: Forty Percent

"She had a friend for seven years," I said. "She just had her on payroll."

Kyla's mother absorbed that without moving.

"She doesn't call us from meets," she said. "She calls you. We used to think it was a phase."

"It was a business model."

"Yes." She turned the glass in her fingers. "I thought so. I wanted to hear someone say it."

She walked back toward the ballroom, upright and unhurried, and did not look back.

Donal found me standing by the lilies with my forehead against the wall.

"Hotel," he said. "Now."

"Gil and Bea are in the next room."

"Your father is already asleep with the television on. Bea has a pizza." He took my hand. "Come on."

His room was on the ninth floor, with a window full of Columbus.

He shut the door behind us, and I turned and pushed him back against it.

"You stood up in front of two hundred people," he said, low, his hands settling on my waist.

"I was shaking."

"I know. I felt it from my chair." He kissed my throat, just under my ear. "You were the best thing I've ever seen."
