Chapter 5: The Invoice

There were four people in the waiting room, and all of them had stopped pretending to read.

A woman with a wrapped wrist, two teenage boys in lacrosse jerseys, and the cyclist, who had never left.

Kyla let her crutches take her weight and looked at me with shining eyes.

"I know it's weird," she said. "But you're the only one I trust. You know my body. You know my history."

"I know your history," I said.

Dane stepped in smoothly, the way he always did when she wobbled.

"What Kyla means is she'd feel so much safer with a friend. You'd be doing her a kindness. Name your price, and Mr. Draper will take care of the rest."

"Name my price," I said.

"Within reason."

He gave me a warm look, the one that once sold fifteen thousand copies of a book built from my notes.

Donal cleared his throat.

"Mr. Seidel. Ms. Draper. This clinic has a policy, and I want you to hear it clearly."

He had folded his arms, which made the limp less obvious and his shoulders more.

"Patients choose who treats them. Ms. Faulk is my intern, so she works under my license, and she bills at the clinic rate like everyone else. That's the only way anyone gets her."

Dane's smile did not move.

"I'm sure that's flexible."

"It's a state board rule," Donal said. "It's not flexible. Also I like her."

The lacrosse boys snorted into their sleeves.

I looked at Kyla.
