Chapter 10: Who Was Jo

I didn't sleep.

I lay on the narrow bed in the guest room with my eyes on the ceiling and listened to him pace downstairs until the sky went gray.

At seven he knocked on my door and didn't wait for me to answer.

"Get dressed," Rhett said. "We're going to the bar."

"Why?"

"Because I want to ask Dahlia something, and I want you to hear it."

Mae's bar was empty at that hour, with the chairs still up on the tables and the neon sign off.

Dahlia came down the back stairs in a pink robe, barefoot, with a mug in her hands.

"Rhett," she said. "Rhona. Is something wrong?"

He pulled out a chair and sat across from her.

I stayed standing by the pool table.

"I've never asked you this," he said. "I've waited eight years to ask it, and I was afraid to."

"Ask me anything."

"The last morning at the cabin," Rhett said. "When my club's trucks came up the road. You were at the door. What did you say to me?"

Dahlia's smile didn't move.

She set the mug down very gently.

"I told you to be careful," she said. "I said, be careful, please, and that I'd always remember you."

"That's what you said."

"I think so. It was a long time ago. I was so scared, honey. I was crying."

"You were crying."

"Yes."
