Chapter 23: Ask Me Saturday
We held the war council on Pia's tailgate, with Gasket underfoot and a map of the bridge road weighted down by a torque wrench.
Pia tapped the narrow span.
"The truck comes out of this access lane," she said. "I park my biggest wrecker across it at four a.m. with the hood up."
She shrugged.
"Nobody blames a tow truck for being broken down."
"And if he has another way in?" Rhett asked.
"There's one other, and it's a fire road with a gate. I have bolt cutters, and I also have a lock."
Mae stood at the end of the tailgate with the recording on her phone and her mouth set.
"I'll play it for the whole patch at the storage yard before they roll," she said.
Her jaw was set.
"Every man in that lot will hear him say it."
"He'll say it's fake," I said.
"Then he'll say it with two hundred men looking at him."
Dahlia sat apart on an upturned bucket, with her hands between her knees.
"I want to do something," she said.
We all looked at her.
"I mean it. I took your name and I ate at your table, and I can't give any of it back."
She swallowed.
"But he told me one more thing on the phone, the last time. He said it only works because Rhett always looks at the road in front of him and never behind."
Rhett's head came up.
"Then I'll look behind," he said.
"Put me at the end of the line," Dahlia said. "On the last bike. I'll watch every rider who leaves it."
"Why would you do that?" Pia asked.
"Because for two weeks I was somebody I'm not, and I'd like a day as myself."
Nobody said yes out loud.
Pia handed her a helmet, and that was the answer.
That night Rhett drove us back to his house.
I stood at the kitchen window with my arms wrapped around myself and the yard going dark.
He came up behind me and stopped a foot away.
