Chapter 13: Say It Into the Microphone

The microphone squealed, and three hundred people winced together.

"My name is Hallie Brennan," I said. "Most of you are wearing my stitching."

A few of the men looked down at their vests.

"On Tuesday at 5:03 in the morning, I watched my husband walk out of Delaney Rooke's front door."

Someone near the pie table said, "Oh, Lord."

Rhett stepped toward me.

"Hal," he said, low. "Not here."

"You picked here, Rhett. You and Dutch picked the biggest crowd in the county."

I didn't look at him.

I looked at the small gray-haired woman beside the silver truck, and I kept my eyes on her.

"I thought I knew what I was looking at," I said. "A man cheating on his wife with the club bookkeeper."

"I went home and he lied to me in my own kitchen. I changed the locks. I thought that was the whole story."

"It wasn't."

Dutch had stopped smiling.

He moved a half step toward me and put out his hand for the microphone.

I turned my shoulder to him and kept talking.

"Rhett never slept in that house. He slept on her floor. Delaney will tell you that herself."

The crowd made a low sound.

Rhett's face had gone white.

"The shirt, the laugh, the walk down the steps, all of it was staged for me," I said. "Dutch told my husband I'd come looking. He wanted me to see it, and cry, and leave."
