Chapter 18: Nothing He Can Pay

Hallie's POV

I pulled on jeans and a sweatshirt and went down the back stairs barefoot.

Jesse came behind me and stopped on the third step from the top.

I didn't ask him to stay out of it, and he didn't offer.

Rhett stood in the alley beside his idling bike, in the first gray light.

He hadn't slept either.

He had a brown envelope in one hand and his helmet in the other.

"Hal," he said.

"You're on my landlord's property."

"I know." He set the helmet on the seat. "I won't stay long."

He looked up at Jesse on the stairs.

Whatever he saw, he didn't say anything about it.

"I went to the sheriff last night," Rhett said. "At eleven. I sat in his office until two."

I waited.

"I gave him my phone. Every text Dutch ever sent me about Delaney. Where to park, what days, what to say to you."

"The one from March that says, she'll be the first one to look the other way if you give her a reason."

"That one's mine. I wrote that. I'm giving him that too."

He held the envelope out.

"That's a copy of everything. I thought you should have your own."

I didn't take it.

"He told me I could go to prison for what I did," Rhett said. "Conspiracy, or something. The sheriff said the DA will decide. I said I don't care."

"Do you?"

"I'm scared to death."

"Good," I said.

He nodded.

"The bike's sold," he said. "I signed it over to Birdie's nephew this morning for the money. It's in the envelope too. That's for the lawyer. For the divorce. I'm not going to fight you on one thing."
