Chapter 6: What He Knew

Jesse let go of my wrist and stood up.

He did it slowly, and he put himself between me and the door.

"You've got something to say, Brennan," he said. "Say it to me."

Rhett leaned a shoulder on the doorframe.

"I'm just telling my wife a fact. She's got a right to know who she's leaning on."

"You lost the right to call her that on Tuesday."

"Did I?" Rhett's grin came back, crooked and easy. "She's still wearing my ring."

I looked down.

I was.

I hadn't taken it off.

I hadn't even thought about it.

"Ask him why he handed in his patch four years ago," Rhett said to me. "Ask him what day it was."

"Get out of my shop," I said.

"It's Dutch's shop."

"Then get out of Dutch's shop before I call the sheriff and tell him you're trespassing on a lease I still hold."

He laughed.

But he straightened up off the doorframe.

"Thirty days, Hal," he said. "Then you've got nothing."

He put his helmet on, and the engine roared, and the light swung away across the wall.

The shop was very quiet.

Jesse didn't turn around.

"What day was it?" I said.

"The day you married him."

I stared at his back.

"I'd like to tell you the rest of it. Not tonight."

"You quit the club the day I got married."

"I walked out of the church. I stood in the back during the vows. Then I drove to Dutch's house and put my patch on his kitchen table."

"Why?"

"Not tonight, Hallie."

I should have let it go.

I was tired, and my hand was throbbing, and a man had just stood in front of me and not moved.

But something had been sitting in my chest since morning, and it chose that moment to come out.
