On Friday the board accepted his resignation in less than fifteen minutes.
Ingmar sat at the long table in a suit that no longer felt like armor.
The old man with the stern face read the motion aloud.
The clause in his father's will was waived by a vote of eight to nothing.
The shares would go to the independent trustee.
The trustee would hold them for the nine thousand people who worked for the company, and not for Hedvig.
The woman with the pearls moved that the chief operating officer be named chief executive in March.
The gray tired man with the lanyard said, "Me?" and looked at the ceiling.
Ingmar signed one sheet of paper.
It took no time at all, and he looked at his own name on it for some time after the pen was down.
"That is all?" he said.
"That is all, Mr. Ekeberg," said the old man gravely. "Thank you for your service."
He walked out of the boardroom into the corridor.
He kept walking until he reached his office.
He went in and shut the door and stood in the middle of the carpet with nothing to do.
The walnut desk was bare.
