Chapter 9: Coat Check
"At midnight," Ingmar said into his ear, "I am going to take you into the coat check and put your face against the wall."
He said it softly, with a glass of champagne in his hand and his eyes on the ballroom.
Bartek, in a rented tuxedo that had cost him a week's pay, almost dropped his own glass.
"Sir," he said. "There are four hundred people."
"There are four hundred and nine."
"They'll hear you."
"They will hear nothing. I am a man speaking to his assistant about the seating chart." Ingmar sipped. "I am going to kneel behind you and open you with my tongue until you cannot stand."
Heat ran down Bartek's spine and settled low.
"That's not in the terms," he said.
"Which one?"
"Number two. I'm supposed to be the one who asks."
"Then you may refuse." Ingmar finally turned his head. "You may ask me to stop speaking. You may say no, and I will take you to the car instead and say nothing more."
Under the chandeliers of the Palmer House, in a black tie, the Iceman waited.
Bartek looked at him.
"Don't you dare stop," he said.
The corner of Ingmar's mouth moved.
"Midnight," he said, and walked away through the crowd.
For three hours Bartek was the assistant.
He carried a clipboard no one needed.
He fetched a board member's wrap, and found another one's missing husband, and was introduced to a senator as "Mr. Ekeberg's colleague," which was true.
Across the room Ingmar stood among his directors, tall and untouchable, and every time Bartek looked he was looking back.
