Chapter 10: The Leak

At 5:50 the next morning I was standing in the penthouse kitchen with the Tribune on the island and a coffee going cold.

Bogdan's house key had been in my mailbox since midnight, on a keychain with a golf tee.

THIRTY-DAY WIFE, the headline said.

Under it was a photograph of the sapphire on my hand.

"I can kill it," Lucas said.

He stood in the doorway with his phone, barefoot.

"One call to the publisher.

"It won't run again."

"No."

"Magda."

"If you kill it, the story is that the CEO killed it," I said.

"She leaked a page of the contract.

"I'll show them the rest."

He looked at me for a long moment.

"What do you need?"

"Fifteen minutes on the front steps of the Grand," I said, "and a pen."

At 7:40 there were thirty cameras on the steps of the Gorski Grand.

Kit stood to my left with a tray of coffees and an expression of total joy.

Lucas stood a step behind me, with his hands at his sides.

I'd asked him to.

"Good morning," I said.

"I'm Magda Dombrowski, and yes, it's a contract."

A noise went through the cameras.

"It's thirty days.

"It was signed by two people who didn't want the board to end in a scandal.

"Some of you have the first page.

"I'd like you to read the lines that Director Kruszewski skipped."

I held up the board.

Every lens swung to the yellow highlighting, and a hundred shutters went at once.

Kit held up the napkin I'd written the original on, and the shutters went again.
