Chapter 14: What It Cost

Kit put a mug of tea in my hands and sat on the coffee table facing me.

"I'll say one thing," she said.

"Then I'll shut up and order pizza."

"Say it."

"Which part are you angriest about?"

I opened my mouth to give her the list.

The contract, the clause, the stairwell, the ring, the two years, the dinner.

What came out was none of it.

"He let me tell him about Teddy," I said.

"I sat on that landing while he cried, and he said it was the paint."

Kit winced.

"That's a bad one."

"He had the whole story in his pocket, and he let me hand him mine like a stranger."

"Okay," Kit said.

"That's the thing, then.

"Not that he lied.

"He never actually lied."

"Don't defend him."

"I'm not.

"I'm saying 'not yet' isn't a lie, and you're furious anyway, and that means it was worse than a lie.

"It was a door he held shut, and he smiled at you through it."

I put the mug down because my hand wouldn't hold it.

"I kissed him first," I said.

"In front of a hundred people, to win a fight with Clara.

"I didn't even like him that week."

"You liked him in about four days," Kit said.
