Chapter 16: Fellowship Hall
The woman with the pearls from the Lakeshore Club called me herself.
"Arlene's guild luncheon is Thursday at noon," she said. "She plans to ask the whole church to pray for her family. I thought you should be in the room."
"Why would you tell me?"
"I've known her thirty years." Her voice was thin and careful. "I would like to hear what she says when you're sitting there."
The fellowship hall had round tables, paper tablecloths and a coffee urn that hissed.
There were about sixty women, and they were eating chicken salad.
Arlene stood at the lectern in her blue church suit, with a card of notes in her hand.
I came in late and took the empty chair beside the woman with the pearls.
Elias had walked me to the door and stayed outside, because the hall was no place for him.
Arlene saw me when I sat down.
Her mouth stopped in the middle of a word.
Then she smoothed her notes and kept going.
"As I was saying, my family has been through a terrible season. My son has been slandered, and a young girl who is carrying his child has been tormented. We ask your prayers. And we hope," she looked at me, "that a daughter who has strayed will come home."
A few heads turned.
I stood up.
"Mrs. Lyle," I said. "May I say something to the guild?"
"Rochelle, this isn't the time."
"It's the time you picked," said the woman with the pearls, beside me. "Let her talk, Arlene."
Nobody spoke, and nobody left.
