Chapter 18: Mom's Headstone

Rochelle's POV

My mother's grave was under a maple at the back of the cemetery, and the leaves on it were turning.

Alasdair had asked me to come at eight, before the gala and before the day started in earnest.

He was already there when I walked up, in a dark coat, holding a bunch of yellow roses upside down by the stems.

"They go the other way," I said.

"Do they?"

"The flowers go up, Alasdair."

He turned them over, and a petal fell off, and he looked at it with real despair.

Elias had parked at the gate and stayed in the car with the engine off.

He had kissed me once before I got out, where only the windshield could see, and I could still feel it on my mouth.

I stood beside Alasdair and read the stone.

It had my mother's name, two dates and one line under them that she had chosen herself.

I hadn't been back since the day we buried her.

Chad had said cemeteries made me spiral, so I hadn't asked to come.

"I wrote something," Alasdair said.

He took out his phone and cleared his throat.

"Dear Rochelle. Over the course of the last six years, I have had occasion to consider my conduct at our engagement dinner." He stopped. "That's bad."

"It's very bad."

"I had a lawyer look at it."

"Alasdair."

"Okay." He put the phone in his pocket and looked at the stone instead of me. "I'll do it badly."

"Do it badly."

He breathed out through his nose.

"I'm sorry I said I wouldn't come to your wedding. I was angry, and I thought if I held out you'd see sense. That's not how it works with you. It never was."
