Chapter 19: On His Arm

The ballroom of the Lakeshore Club held three hundred people, and every one of them turned to look when we came in.

I wore a green dress that left my shoulders bare and no jewelry at all.

My left hand rested on my brother's arm.

The third finger had a pale band where the ring used to be, and I didn't cover it.

"Chin up," Alasdair murmured.

"It is up."

"Then look pleased."

"I'm very pleased."

"You look like you're going to burn the place down."

"That's pleased."

Behind us, Elias had stopped at the coat check, where a man in a rumpled suit was waiting for him by the umbrellas.

I knew the man. He was the project manager who had filmed the dinner and the lawn.

He didn't have a phone in his hand now.

He had a thumb drive, and he said something fast and low to Elias, and Elias took it without a word.

"Three months of unpaid wages," Alasdair said, watching them. "Elias called him yesterday. People like it when you ask."

"What's on it?"

"What Chad said on your lawn, from the camera, with the sound."

The room had gone quiet around us, and I let it.

The lenders were at the first table, four men in dark suits and a woman from the bank with a leather folder.

They had stopped eating when they saw Alasdair.

At the head of the room, under a banner that said TEN YEARS OF LYLE HOME GROUP, a receiving line had formed.

Arlene stood in it in champagne silk, with her powder a little too thick.
