Chapter 6: Lunch at the Lakeshore Club

The Lakeshore Club had white tablecloths, a view of the lake and a rule that nobody raised their voice.

On Saturday I walked in at noon in a navy dress Alasdair's assistant had bought me.

Arlene was already at the window table with a pot of tea.

She stood and kissed my cheek, and she held my hands a second too long.

"My poor girl," she said. "You look thin."

Two women I knew from her church were at the next table, and they both looked over.

"Sit, sit. I only want us to talk like family."

I sat.

She poured my tea and asked after my hand, which still wore a bandage.

I told her I'd broken a glass.

"Chad has been beside himself," she said. "He doesn't sleep. Poppy is in a fragile state, and she's expecting, you know."

"I heard."

"Then you understand why this has to end quietly."

She slid a cream envelope across the cloth.

Inside was a cashier's check for fifty thousand dollars, made out to me.

"That's for a fresh start," Arlene said. "Take it, sign the papers Friday, and we'll tell people it was mutual. No one will say a bad word about you again."

I looked at the check.

Then I looked at the two women at the next table, who had stopped pretending to read the menu.

"Fifty thousand dollars," I said at normal volume. "To sign by Friday."

"Rochelle, dear, lower your voice."

"Is that what five years of dinners are worth?"
