Chapter 24: Brent Bleeds
The shot was enormous in that room.
It bounced off the steel trailers and came back at us from every side.
Brent jerked backward into me.
We went down together on the concrete, his weight across my legs.
Something warm spread over my knees.
"Brent."
He didn't answer.
He was looking up at the work light with his mouth open.
Then every bay door on the north wall went up at once.
It happened with a roar of chains, all of them together, and white light poured in off the terminal cranes.
Men came through the gaps under the rising doors.
Dozens of them.
Dario's men, and in the middle of them, Dario, with his sling gone and a gun in his good hand.
"Down!" someone shouted in Italian. "Everybody down!"
The underboss swung toward the light.
He never got the gun up.
Two of Dario's men hit him from the side, and he went down hard on the concrete with the gun skittering away under a trailer.
His two men didn't even try.
They dropped their pistols and put their hands on their heads.
It was over in the time it took me to get Brent's head into my lap.
