Chapter 31: The Cathedral

"Yes," I said.

His shoulders sagged.

"The last pew," I said. "On the left. My father's men will put you there."

"Thank you."

"And Brent. If you stand up, sit back down."

He almost smiled.

"I'll try," he said.

I woke on my thirtieth birthday in my narrow bed, under my old football posters.

The housekeeper brought me coffee and a slice of almond cake with one candle in it.

She lit it with a kitchen match and sang the birthday song in dialect, badly, the way she had when I was five.

I blew it out.

"Thirty," she said. "And married. Your mother is laughing somewhere."

My aunt did the buttons.

There were forty-two of them down the back of the dress.

She did every one herself and wouldn't let my cousins touch them.

The shoulders sat right.

The sleeves came to my wrists.

When I turned around to the mirror, all three of my cousins burst into tears at once.

I put my mother's rosary around my wrist, the olive-wood beads against the ivory silk.

My father was waiting at the bottom of the stairs in his black suit.
