Chapter 14: Corvane Tower
Corvane Tower has a lobby with a waterfall inside it.
I walked past the waterfall on Monday at nine o'clock with a banker's box on my hip and nineteen neighbors' signatures in a folder.
I wore the mustard cardigan and my father's coat, and I had not slept.
Amory walked half a step behind me, in the gray jacket, with the unsigned packet under his arm.
The security guard saw the silver hair and stood up so fast his chair rolled backward.
"Mr. Bexley," he said.
"Good morning," Amory said, as if apologizing.
The forty-first floor had glass walls and a boardroom table you could have landed a plane on.
Eight people sat around it in dark suits.
Todhunter sat at the head, in the chair with the brass nameplate that said CHAIRMAN.
"Ms. Haskell," Todhunter said, rising, with his hand out.
"What a pleasure. We've cleared the morning."
I did not shake it.
I set the box on the glass.
"I'm not counsel," I said, to the room.
