The Surrogate's courtroom had a ceiling so high that sound went up into it and did not come back.
Maribeth sat at the petitioner's table in lilac, with her lawyer on one side and no one on the other.
Chelsea was not there.
Dwight was not there.
Behind me, the gallery held the whole of Orchard Row in their church coats, and the Army kid's mother held a thermos.
Amory sat beside me at the respondent's table in the gray jacket.
He had asked me twice that morning whether he should wear the vest.
The judge was a heavy woman with half-glasses and the look of someone who had been fooled once, early, and had arranged her career around it.
"Ms. Haskell," she said.
"You're appearing for yourself."
"Yes, Your Honor."
"You're a paralegal."
"I was, Your Honor."
"Proceed, counsel."
Maribeth's lawyer stood and buttoned his jacket.
"Your Honor, this marriage is a transaction."
"It was entered into on a Tuesday, the morning after a will was read, between a woman who stood to lose a house and a man she had known for six weeks."
