Chapter 15: Say It So the Line Can Hear

By Wednesday night the hospital had pulled Bree's badge for the back corridor.

The coordinator called me herself to say it was done, and that security had her photo at the front desk.

I didn't feel safe, only a little less watched.

I answered Dillon's text on Thursday morning.

I wrote: Bank. Ten o'clock. The same branch. Bring your mother. Don't text me again.

He was waiting on the sidewalk at ten to ten, with his mother beside him in a church coat.

He had not slept in days, and his collar was buttoned wrong.

His mother looked at me and did not say hello.

She took her son's elbow and walked him through the glass doors.

Inside, the banker who had frozen his account was already standing behind her desk with a folder.

She nodded to me. She had been a good ally and had not once asked for thanks.

There were nine people in the lobby, in line for the tellers, and every one of them could hear us.

"Mr. Gleeson," the banker said. "You asked to release the hold on the account ending in 4410."

"Yes."

"To Ms. Merrow."

"Yes."

"Say it so the line can hear," I said.

Dillon's mother turned her head and looked at him.

He swallowed.

"I took money out of Vicky's savings," he said, too low.

"Louder."

"I took money out of Vicky's savings!"

A man in the line lowered his phone.

"I did it on her phone, at night, while she was asleep," Dillon said. "I knew her passcode. I moved forty-eight thousand dollars and I spent it on a trip. This is what's left of it. It's hers."

He signed where the banker pointed.
