Chapter 4: Flowers on the Landing

On Sunday afternoon I sat on the front steps of my building with Biscuit and waited.

I had picked the steps on purpose.

Every Sunday the whole building sat out front, because the old man in 2B grilled hot dogs on a tiny charcoal grill and nobody had ever managed to stop him.

I had told the old man a short version of what had happened.

He had turned the grill up and said, "Then we'll be right here."

By four o'clock a dozen neighbors were on the lawn with paper plates.

At 4:20 Dillon's gray sedan turned onto the street, followed by Toby's truck.

They parked behind each other and the doors opened.

Dillon got out with a huge bunch of yellow roses.

Bree got out of the passenger side with a sunburned nose and a little gift bag, smiling at me across the lawn like it was the best day of her year.

Toby climbed down last, carrying two suitcases and trying not to look at anyone.

"Vicky!" Bree called. "Oh my God, there she is."

I did not stand up.

I had my phone in my lap, and the camera was already recording.

Dillon came up the walk, tanned, relaxed, the picture of a man who had been on vacation.

"Babe," he said. "Hey. I know you're mad. Let me just explain."

He held out the roses.

I did not take them.

"Explain," I said.

He glanced at the neighbors.

"Can we do this inside?"

"No."

"Vicky." His voice went low and soft, the one he used on customers who were about to sign. "Come on. People are looking."

"That's the idea."

Bree stepped in beside him and put her hand on his arm.

"Vic, let me. Dillon's been a mess about this all week. We did something dumb, but we did it for you."
