Chapter 5: The Joint Account

The email was in my inbox when I got home Sunday night, sent from a restaurant's billing address eleven days ago.

The subject line said "Your Joint Account Authorization."

I opened the attachment at my kitchen table with Biscuit asleep on my feet.

It was a single page.

My signature sat at the bottom, loopy and tired.

Above it, in small type I had not read at the table, it said I agreed to add Dillon Gleeson as a joint owner on my savings account ending 0916.

There was a line for a bank officer's stamp.

The line was empty.

I knew what an empty line meant.

On Monday at nine I was standing in the lobby of my bank with the printout, a folder, and a cup of coffee I had not drunk.

The branch manager took me into a glass office.

He read the form once, and then he read it a second time, slower.

"Ms. Merrow, who gave you this?"

"My boyfriend sent it to me."

"A joint ownership change on a savings account has to be done in person, with two forms of ID from both parties, and a stamp from one of us."

"There's no stamp."

"No," he said. "There isn't."

"So it never happened."

"It means that this form was never filed with us. If Mr. Gleeson believed it was, he was mistaken. The account was only ever yours."

I put both hands flat on his desk.

"Then he didn't have the right to move the money."

"He had your phone."

"I know."

"That will make it a long process," he said, not unkindly. "But it won't be a joint account, and it won't be a gift. I'll open a fraud case today and flag Mr. Gleeson's account as the receiving party. The eight thousand two hundred eighty-eight that went into his checking account, I can freeze right now."

"Right now?"
