Chapter 9: What He Could Not Pay

Lorcan's POV

On Friday night I stood in the hospital's finance office, in the dark, with my own login on a stranger's computer.

I was not supposed to be there.

Vicky had told me at four that afternoon that Bree Danner had paid off Dillon's thefts.

The first thing I typed into the records system was Bree's name.

It returned nothing, and I did not trust that.

I was a senior surgeon, and I had keys to every door on the fourth floor, and I still had to talk my way past security with a story about a missing file.

The finance director had gone home at six.

I had her policy manual open on the screen.

It was a long document, and I had read Section 9 three times.

A physician may not pay, subsidize, or defer a patient's deposit, directly or through any third party, in order to avoid the appearance of conflict.

There was a footnote.

Waivers of the surgeon's own professional fee were permitted, and did not constitute a conflict.

I had already used that one.

I had signed her fee off the day her name reached my schedule, three weeks ago, before I had said a word to her.

I had told myself it was routine.

It was not routine.

I had not waived a fee in eleven years.

I closed the manual.

Moss was waiting for me in the hallway, lying across the doorway with his chin on his paws.

"I know," I told him. "I tried."

He thumped his tail twice.

At my apartment I fed him, and then I sat at the kitchen table without turning on the light.

I had a folder open in front of me.

It was her chart, which I had printed against hospital rules, and I knew every line of it.
