The Our Lady of Fatima procession goes down the avenue on the third Sunday of October, with the statue on a bier and four hundred people behind it carrying candles.
I walked it in my mother's church coat with a candle in a paper cup.
I kept a step behind the cousins, and the whole pack watched me do it.
Duarte walked at the front with the Council.
He did not look back.
At the church steps the priest blessed the boats and the old women, and the band played the hymn the Azorean grandmothers weep at.
I did not weep.
I stood in the dark with candle smoke in my hair.
I thought about a man standing perfectly still while I put my hand on his throat.
After, I slipped away down Union Street.
The old chandlery sits in the middle of the block, a brick front with a hand-painted anchor.
It had been Duarte's grandfather's, and the Cabrals kept it for the rope.
He had left a note at the shed that afternoon, in his square slanting hand.

I climbed the ladder in the dark.
The loft ran the length of the building under the beams, and it smelled of tar and hemp and old canvas.
Coils of line hung from the rafters in every thickness.
A lantern burned on a barrel.
He was standing beside it in shirtsleeves, with his back to the wall.
"You came," Duarte said.
"I haven't decided anything," I said.
