Chapter 14: The Step
I read the law-book that night at my kitchen table with a cup of tea going cold at my elbow.
It was written in four hands over a hundred and fifty years, in brown ink and blue and one stretch of pencil.
Nearly all of it was Portuguese I could follow if I went slowly.
The founding page said what Graça had read.
The pages after it were a ledger of every Alpha.
Under each name, in a smaller hand, ran a line headed *Mate*.
Most of the lines gave a name.
Some said *none*, and the Seat in those years had gone to a brother or a son, with a note about a vote.
The page for Duarte said *Mate: not yet spoken*, in Graça's careful ink.
Under it she had added a sentence in pencil, and then rubbed it half out.
I held the page up to the lamp.
*I should have read the first leaf the day he sat down.*
I put the book on the table and looked at it for a long time.
Then I put on my slicker and went down to the wharf.
He had come in from the end of the wharf and sat on the stone steps at the foot of the shed with his collar up and the bay black behind him.
He stood when he heard me.
"I'm not here to forgive you," I said.
