I woke up to a string of messages from a number I'd never saved.

They were all from Eli's girlfriend, and they had been sent in the order the night had happened to her.

The first was a screenshot of the group chat.

It had a new name now, which Colson had typed in the middle of the night.

"Everything is Susanna's fault."

Under it, the four of them had been fighting for hours.

Colson wrote that the villa had cancelled their reservation because the autopay failed.

Daphne wrote that the villa had cancelled it because Colson said the card was fine.

Toby wrote that he had asked for a cheaper place in the first place and nobody had listened.

Eli wrote, "Can we please not do this over text."

Colson wrote, "You're the one who typed 'Looks great' to the girl we're hiding things from."

Eli wrote nothing after that.

The second screenshot was a photo of a hotel parking lot.

A man was sitting on a curb beside a pile of duffels, scrolling his phone.

It was Eli.

The caption from his girlfriend said, "They're in a motel in Kahului. It costs a hundred and twelve a night and they are splitting a room."

The third message was longer.

"I broke up with Eli an hour ago. I'm not telling you this so you'll feel anything. I just wanted you to know I didn't know. I thought he was working weekends. I cried for two hours and then I cleaned out his half of the closet."
