Chapter 11: The Lobby

Toby was standing in the middle of the lobby with one duffel at his feet.

He looked like he had slept in an airport, which he had.

His hair was flat on one side, and his Hawaii shirt had a coffee stain on the pineapple.

The receptionist stood beside the desk with her hands folded, ready to call security if I nodded.

Two people from the fifth floor had stopped by the elevators to watch.

I walked over and stopped an arm's length from my brother.

"Sue," he said. His voice cracked on it. "I got here as fast as I could."

"You have ten minutes. Then I have a meeting."

"Can we go somewhere?"

"We're somewhere."

He glanced at the people by the elevators and swallowed.

"Okay," he said. "Okay."

I didn't give him anything to lean on.

"One question," I said. "Did Colson pay your rent?"

His whole face changed.

It went slack.

He had never been a good liar.

I had always thought that was the best thing about him.

"Sue, I..."

"Yes or no."

"Yes."

The lobby was very quiet.

"For how long?"

"A little over a year." His eyes were wet. "He came to my apartment last spring. I was three months behind. The landlord had a notice on my door, and I'd been hiding it from you."
