Chapter 16: Daphne's Version
"I'll be at the shop across the street," Dojin said quietly.
"You don't have to."
"I know. I'll be at the window."
He let go of my hand and walked away without looking back, and I watched him go into the convenience store and stand by the glass with a bottle of water he didn't open.
Then I crossed to the bench.
Daphne stood up when she saw me.
She had no sundress on.
She wore jeans and a gray sweatshirt, her blonde hair was tied back, and her eyes were swollen.
"I'm not going to cry at you," she said. "I did that at the gate and it was a trick. I know it was."
"Sit down, Daphne."
She sat, and I sat at the other end of the bench.
A scooter went by, and a woman walked past with a small dog in a pink raincoat.
"I came alone," Daphne said. "Colson is at the hotel. He thinks I'm at the pharmacy."
"What do you want?"
"To tell you what happened. All of it, once, with nobody filming."
She folded her hands in her lap.
"It started two years ago in October, at your birthday dinner. You went to the restroom and Colson and I talked on the sidewalk."
"Two nights later I went to his office parking lot."
"I'm not telling you it just happened. I knew every time. I knew when I texted you good morning, and I knew when I let you pay for brunch."
My hands had gone cold.
"The group chat was my idea," she said. "Not the trips, the chat. Colson wanted to keep it small, and I said we could keep it together with Toby and Eli so it looked like a friend thing."
