Chapter 7: Incheon

The plane touched down at Incheon at four in the afternoon, a day later than it had left.

In Seoul it was already July 4th, and nobody in the terminal knew or cared.

I turned off airplane mode at the end of the jet bridge.

My phone shook in my hand for a full minute.

It buzzed and buzzed.

There were over two hundred missed calls stacked on the screen.

Most of the texts began with my name.

"Susanna, please pick up."

"Sue, this is insane."

"Babe, the villa people are saying my card is declined."

"Susanna, I'm serious, answer me."

There were eleven voicemails from Colson alone.

I played none of them.

I opened the contacts, tapped his name, and pressed Block.

Then Daphne.

Then Toby, which was harder, because his name had a little photo of us at his high school graduation.

Then Eli.

The phone went quiet in my hand.

I stood in the middle of the arrivals hall, holding it, and breathed out.

Nothing in the air had changed, but something in my chest had.

A new text arrived from a number I didn't have saved.

"Hi. I'm sorry to message you like this. I'm Eli's girlfriend. We've met once, at his birthday, I don't know if you remember me. He never told me about any trips. Is it true what's going around?"

I read it twice.
