My Brother Left Me With the Man He Told Me to Stay Away From, and Then Didn't Come Back novel · Chapter 11 of 24
Chapter 11: Alone
I went at four, alone, in my own car, against the one order Laz had ever given me twice.
I told myself it was the only way to find out what Spiros wanted.
That was true.
I also wanted to see what I would do when I sat across from him with no one to lift his hand away.
The kafeneio was nearly empty.
Six old men played tavli at the front tables with the clack of dice and the smell of coffee and anise.
A ceiling fan turned over the long back table.
Spiros sat at the head of it under his brother's photograph, with a newspaper folded beside him.
He rose when he saw me.
"Thalia," he said, warmly.
"You came.
"Good girl."
I did not say anything to that.
"Sit," he said.
"Here, beside me.
"I'll make you the coffee myself."
He did.
He carried a little brass pot from the counter and poured it into a white cup, and set the cup in front of me with the saucer turned so the handle faced my right hand.
He sat down close, so close that his knee rested against the side of my chair.
I had noticed that the six old men at the front had stopped throwing dice.
