Chapter 20: The Fire
The fish house stood at the foot of the docks with its back to the water, a long gray building older than my mother.
The smoke from it stood in the sky a quarter mile high.
Laz drove the truck up over the curb and stopped across the end of the boulevard.
The fire trucks were already there, and the crowd.
The men from the boats stood along the rail with their caps in their hands.
Flames showed in the windows of the second floor, in the corner room, where the office was.
"The ledger room," Laz said.
He was out of the truck before I could answer.
I ran after him in my bare feet, with my shoes in my hand.
The heat reached us at the second barricade, a wall of it that made my eyes stream.
A fireman in a yellow coat put an arm across Laz's chest.
"Sir, you can't."
"There's a man in the loading bay," Laz said.
"A deckhand.
"He sleeps in the back."
"We got him out," the fireman said.
"The bay door?"
"We got him out, sir," the fireman said.
Laz stood there with his hands open.
He had been about to go in, and I saw it, and so did the fireman, and so did every man along the rail.
