Nobody moved.

The word hung over the white cloth, and two hundred people looked at the pink slips, and at the old man, and at me.

I stood in the middle of the table with my hands at my sides.

I did not defend myself.

There was nothing to say that the paper had not said already.

Then someone behind me put a hand down flat on the cloth.

It was a large hand, bandaged at the wrist.

It came down on the white linen beside my envelope with a sound no louder than a book being closed.

"Sit down, Uncle," Laz said.

He did not raise his voice.

He had never once raised it in front of his uncle, in thirty-four years, and he didn't now.

He said it quietly, and every person at the table heard it.

Spiros turned his head.

"Lazaros," he said.

"You've been misled by this girl..."

"Sit down," Laz said.

"I will not be spoken to..."

"You have sat in my father's chair for fifteen years," said Laz.

"You have eaten from my grandmother's hand.

"You put your ring on a woman's leg in my kafeneio and called it affection.

"You sent four men to her gate, and you burned my fish house.

"You stood in front of the fire and told me it was the wiring.

"I have never once raised my hand to you.
