Chapter 6: One File
I did not sleep.
Laz drove me back to Despina's at two.
He walked me to the gate, kissed my forehead as if it cost him something, and went away down the avenue without looking at the phone in my hand.
I had not answered it.
Two numbers had texted me in the same hour.
One was my brother's burner.
The other had the same line, word for word, that Nikos had sent me the day he left.
Eat something.
It was not my brother's voice.
It was someone who had read his texts.
I lay in the brass bed until it was light.
Then I put the laptop on my knees and typed the password, Agia Marina, into the box.
It opened at once.
It was a clean machine.
My brother had deleted his browser history and emptied the trash and left a desktop with nothing on it but a folder of tax forms and a photo of our mother at the beach.
I clicked through every folder in order.
Nothing.
At the bottom of the Documents list was a file I had skipped, named only Sundays.
I opened it.
It was a spreadsheet.
There were three columns, and the first was a date.
The second was a name I did not know, a number of letters and digits that looked like an account.
The third was an amount.
Nine thousand.
Fourteen thousand.
Eleven thousand five hundred.
They ran down the page for two years of Sundays, one a week, sometimes two.
At the bottom of the third column, in a bold box, there was a total.
It was 893,400.
I looked at it for a long time.
