Chapter 14: Fifty-One

The sixth floor looked exactly the way I had left it, except that the cake was gone.

Maggie walked beside me with an empty copy-paper box on her hip and her round glasses pushed up on her nose.

"I'm just here for my ficus," she told the first person who stared.

My lawyer came behind us with an envelope and two visitor passes clipped to her lapel.

It was Tuesday, nine fifteen, and forty heads came up over forty monitors.

Nobody said my name.

They watched me walk down the aisle I had walked for eight years, past my old desk with a stranger's mug on it.

Then Kylie came out of the glass office at the end of the floor.

She was in the cream blazer, and her face did the thing it always did when she saw me.

It opened.

"Tamara!" she said, and she hurried over with both hands out. "You look amazing. Are you here for your things? I put a box together for you, I didn't know where to send it."

"I'm here for Porter," I said.

"He's upstairs with the chairman. I can take whatever it is."

My lawyer held out the envelope.

Kylie took it, still smiling, and slid her thumb under the flap.

The cover letter was one page.

I watched her eyes go down it.

The smile stayed for the first two lines.

At the third it stopped being a smile and became a set of facial muscles that hadn't been told to quit.

"On behalf of Tamara Whitby," she read, and her voice was small, "holder of fifty-one percent of the voting stock of Hollister Group, and so on, a demand for the trust account statements and the shareholder register, delivered by hand, receipt required."
