At noon, the Reeve Partners conference room had two tables pushed together and six chairs.

Porter came in first.

He stopped when he saw me at the head of our side with my laptop open.

"Tamara," he said.

"Mr. Hollister."

He flinched at that, just barely.

Kylie came in behind him, carrying a leather folder and a smile.

"Tamara!" She crossed the room, opened her arms, remembered where she was, and took both my hands instead. "I've been so worried. Are you okay? That video was awful. Everybody's being so cruel."

Her hands were warm and her eyes were wet.

Tobias, from the other end of the table, said, "No touching in the office, Ms. Rutledge."

Kylie let go, laughing.

"Sorry! Rules."

She sat next to Porter and slid her folder open.

The folder had a gold monogram stamped in the corner, a G and an H.

I noticed it and told myself it was a gift.

The Marlowe Foods chief financial officer arrived at five past, a gray-haired woman in a plain suit who had once told me she hated slide decks.

She shook everyone's hand and sat down.

"I'll be brief," she said. "Our contract is up. We've had good service. I want to hear how each firm plans to handle the Ohio distribution rollout."

Kylie straightened and opened her deck.

"We have exciting plans for Ohio," she said. "A refreshed approach. More collaboration, deeper synergy, a focus on the customer journey."

The CFO waited.

"The Ohio plant has two shifts," she said. "Which one do you plan to serve first?"
