Chapter 6: The Answer Is No

The Hollister Foundation gala was held on Thursday in the ballroom of the Drake, and Tobias made me go.

"Every client I want will be there," he said. "So will every client you built. Wear something that makes them remember you quit."

I wore green.

Maggie did my hair in her bathroom with Dennis the cat sitting on the sink, and she said, "If Porter looks at you, look at the wall behind his head. It makes them crazy."

The ballroom held two hundred people and a string quartet.

I stood beside Tobias with a flute of sparkling water, and for twenty minutes people shook my hand and told me the video had been brave.

Then the quartet stopped.

Porter walked onto the stage.

He took the microphone with the ease he'd been born with, and the room went quiet for him.

"Thank you all for coming," he said. "Tonight I want to tell you something I've kept private for too long."

My stomach dropped.

He looked straight at me.

"Twelve years ago, I met a woman who changed my life. I was too afraid to say so in public. This week she reminded me what happens when you hide the best thing you have."

Two hundred heads turned.

Phones came up.

"Tamara Whitby," Porter said. "Will you come up here?"

I didn't move.

Tobias, beside me, said very quietly, "You don't have to."

"I know."

"Do you want me to take you out?"

"No," I said. "I want to hear the rest."

I walked up the aisle in green silk with my heels loud on the parquet.

At the stage, Porter came down the steps, took my hand, and went down on one knee.
