Chapter 19: Keaton Reads Aloud
I gave Keaton a two-hour head start, and then I drove to Findlay behind him.
I told myself it was to check on June.
Emmett had gone back to the hotel to sign a wire transfer. He had kissed my temple in the atrium, in front of eighty people, and nobody had said a word.
The day room was empty when I got to Maple Court.
The nurse at the desk pointed me to the sunroom with her chin.
The door was open six inches.
Keaton sat in the wicker chair next to June's with a folded newspaper on his knee, and he was reading the crossword out loud.
"Five letters," he said. "A hardware store staple."
"What is it?" June asked.
"I think it's, hinge."
"Hinge is five?"
"H, I, N, G, E. Yes."
June looked at him with great patience.
"Young man, you read terribly," she said. "You rush the clues."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"What's your name again?"
He hesitated. I watched his hand tighten on the paper.
"Keaton," he said.
"Mm. I knew a Keaton." June took the newspaper and smoothed it across her lap. "Little boy. He took a bag of nails from my store when he was nine."
Keaton went very still.
"He wanted to build a fort in the back lot. He didn't have any money, so he took a bag, and he put it down his jacket, and he walked out."
"What happened?" Keaton asked.
"A little girl came in an hour later with her allowance in her hand. She put four dollars on my counter and said, those were for the fort."
