Chapter 4: The Man in the Grey Coat
Keaton and Sienna left first, with the folder still under his arm.
I didn't sign it, and nobody tried to make me.
I stood in the sunroom until June fell asleep with the last lemon bar in her hand.
Then I walked out to the parking lot, because I needed air that didn't smell of floor cleaner.
A black car sat in the visitors' row with its engine off.
Emmett Stroud leaned against the passenger door in the charcoal overcoat.
He straightened up when he saw me.
"No," I said.
"I haven't said anything."
"You were here."
"I was," he said. "I'm not going to pretend otherwise."
The wind pushed at my ponytail.
"How long?" I said.
"Two weeks ago I came on a Wednesday. Last Tuesday, I came again."
"You came to see June."
"Yes."
I had thought I was calm. I wasn't.
"She has dementia," I said. "She thinks the man about the electricity is her son."
"I know."
"You sat in front of a sick woman and what, asked her about the company?"
"I brought her tea," Emmett said. "I asked about her hardware store. She told me which aisle the nails were in, and then she asked how Tess was."
I opened my mouth and shut it again.
"Why would you go there at all?" I said.
"Because her name is on the first page of Hallam's books." He said it plainly. "Next to yours. Nobody at the company can tell me why. Keaton said it was a family loan, and then he changed the subject."
