Chapter 7: Pay on Delivery

Keaton's old assistant wanted to meet at a diner off the interstate, at nine at night, with the lights turned low.

She was thirty-something and she'd quit three weeks ago. She kept her coat on the entire time.

"I only want to say it once," she said.

Emmett sat two booths back with a coffee he didn't touch, because I had asked him to.

"Keaton kept a file in his bottom drawer," she said. "He told me to shred it the week before you came back from your days off. I shredded most of it."

"Most."

"The first page jammed in the feeder." She slid a flat brown box across the table. "I don't know what it is. I read one line, and I couldn't stop thinking about you for a week."

"Why give it to me?"

"Because he fired the one person in that building who ever said thank you to me," she said.

She stood up, left a ten on the table, and went out into the dark.

I didn't open the box.

I carried it out to Emmett's car and held it against my chest, and for ten minutes neither of us said anything while the wipers cleared sleet from the glass.

"Not in a parking lot," I said.

"No," he said. "Somewhere with a table and a lamp."

He took me to a bar on High Street with a brass rail and a bartender who ignored us.

The place was packed with Friday-night people, though it was only Monday.
